Summary In this body of work I attempt to discuss transformation on three levels: material, concept, and expression. The sculptures created for this thesis were inspired by the physical characteristics of stone as a material as well as by the scientific study of stones as geologic specimens. The third influence was the Chinese practice of selecting and displaying stones as "Gongshi" which translates as "Scholars' Rocks."
