Summary |
The purpose of this study was to present a history of intercollegiate football at East Carolina University from 1932 through 1975, showing the growth and development of the football program. This study begins with Chapter 1 as the introduction. Chapter 2 through Chapter 7 pertains to the period 1932 through 1975 and each chapter covers a particular era. Chapter 8 includes a summary of intercollegiate football and findings and recommendations of the study. The study reports that football began in 1932 when a group of 25 men reported to Coach Kenneth Beatty for the first football practice. It reveals how the program grew and became more specialized through the years. The findings of the study were: 1. Lack of money for an adequate number of scholarships prevented East Carolina University from obtaining the necessary number of high quality football players. 2. Lack of sufficient number of assistant coaches in the earlier years hampered the football program. 3. Teaching load required of the coaches greatly hampered their time in which to do necessary recruiting. 4. The administration of East Carolina University has always employed football coaches with outstanding qualifications. 5. East Carolina University has always made a constant effort to improve the quality of their football program. 6. Businessmen, university administration, faculty, students, and citizens of Greenville have continuously cooperated with and supported the football program at East Carolina University. |
