| Abstract |
The Adult at the Piano, in three books, presents to piano teachers and adult students a musical approach to first piano playing. These books do not represent Grades One, Two and Three respectively, but offer material progressing gradually and providing a definite training of the ear through the various types of melodies. It offers a basic harmonic foundation and develops a piano technic stressing "keyboard feel", that is, the feeling of intervals under the hand span and a feeling of wide keyboard range. Special attention is given to the development of arm and hand freedom and balance. One of the most important factors in all music study has been kept constantly in mind--that of sight reading. Each selection offers foundational study in reading by direction and interval. This increases the knowledge of the keyboard without looking at the keyboard. The pedal is introduced immediately. Musical style and interpretation is introduced through the music of composers from the early classic to late romantic periods. During the study of these books, it will be found advantageous to present the Companion Series by the same author. With the understanding that good music need not be difficult in order to be beautiful, may the adult pianist find relaxation and musical satisfaction in the playing of the music in The Adult at the Piano and continue indefinitely to play the piano and enjoy their piano study. |
