Collection consists of letters Mary Bason Broadfoot received from men serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. Lt. Richard S. White of the United States Marine Corps Reserve writes of teaching techniques for weapons classes at Camp Lejeune, camp life at Hawaii, the war's effect on armed forces personnel and their wives, and the capture of Mount Suribachi in the battle on Iwo Jima. Lt. Cliff R. Schrom of the United States Army Air Corps describes camp life and tourist attractions in England, writes of Captain Walker Mahurin, and compares British and American officer pay. Also included are Bason's letters that were returned after Schrom was listed as missing in action. Jeremy Blanchet of the United States Naval Reserve discusses flying maneuvers and books determined to be political propaganda by Armed Services censors. Second Lt. George Sadler of the United States Army Air Corps describes camp life in Northern Ireland, censorship while stationed in England, life at a prison camp in Germany, and the effect of the war on Paris. Bason's letters to Sadler mention news censorship and Governor Dewey's campaign tactics during the 1944 presidential election. Letters from other servicemen describe Iceland and Colon, Panama. |
