Photocopy of Bisel's diary (1861-1865) describes the Virginia and Tennessee countryside and the residents' attitudes toward Union soldiers, camp life, marches, treatment of enlisted men by superiors, treatment of Confederate prisoners, soldier morale, experience of battle, and soldiers' attitudes towards the Emancipation Proclamation and President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Other descriptions include the Battle of Cheat Mountain; Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign; Second Bull Run Campaign, including battles at Cedar Mountain and Bull Run; Chancellorsville Campaign; defense of the Nashville-Chattanooga Railroad at Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, March to the Sea, and Carolina Campaign. Also includes commentary on Ulysses S. Grant's successes at Petersburg and Richmond. Of particular interest is a copy of a letter from Ohio governor John Brough that expresses anger at Confederate treatment of Union prisoners, copies of dispatches reporting Jefferson Davis's capture, and copy of a newspaper article that urges benevolence toward the South. Also contains a list of the members of the 12th Ohio Battery and description of Shelby, Ohio. |
