Sallie Baker Everett papers, 1941-1961.

Abstract The bulk of the collection consists of incoming correspondence to Mrs. Everett, programs from the North Carolina Farm Bureau conference, certificates of merit, and newspaper clippings. Correspondence concerns Democratic Woman's Day; the 1952 North Carolina gubernatorial election; presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson; Everett's election as National Committee Woman; events of the North Carolina Democratic Party and the North Carolina Young Democrats; efforts of Democratic women, especially Katie Louchheim; postal service in Palmyra; the 1960 Democratic National Convention; Terry Sanford's leadership; and the split in the North Carolina delegation over Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy. Also included are telegrams and letters from Albert Gore and John F. Kennedy concerning the 1956 National Democratic Convention; Elizabeth Ives, sister of Adali Stevenson; LeRoy Collins; and various North Carolina politicians expressing their appreciation to Everett. Newspaper clippings give Mrs. Everett's views on federal aid to education, the Suez Crisis of 1957, and an executive committee meeting in San Francisco, Calif., in 1957.

Biographical noteSallie Spruill Baker Everett (b.1888-), a native of Palmyra, N. C., married Benjamin Bryan Everett in 1914 and became a partner with her husband in an extensive farming and merchant business at "Woodstock" in Palmyra. While her husband served in the North Carolina General Assembly, she was president of the Sir Walter Cabinet for legislators' wives. Mrs. Everett was active in the Associated Women of the North Carolina Farm Bureau, serving as chairman 1942-1952, and was recipient of the Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award in 1947 and the Progressive Farmer's Woman of the Year Award in 1946. She was the Vice-Chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Executive Committee in 1942-1948 and 1950, the manager of the women's campaign for William B. Umstead (1952), and a member of the North Carolina delegation to the Democratic National Convention (1952-1960) and Democratic National Committee Woman from North Carolina (1952-1960).
