Abstract Sixteenth president of the United States : Born in Kentucky; spent formative years in Indiana; moved to Illinois where he practiced law and became active in politics. Republican candidate for vice-president in 1856, and won presidential elections of 1860 and 1864. Assassinated five days after end of the war.
