Abstract This is the first critical assessment of Carl Nielsen to appear in book form outside the composer's native Denmark, and its author is the best qualified of all the younger critics to introduce the subject of Nielsen and his music to the English musical public. In the last two year Carl Nielsen's music has been cordially received by British listeners, after some twenty years of neglect caused, not by lack of sympathy in this country, but by difficulties in obtaining scores and material. Thus when the Danish State Radio Symphony Orchestra visited Edinburgh in 1950 and London last year, the audiences sensed in the performances of Nielsen's fourth and fifth symphonies that indefinable note of greatness in music. At the same time, excellent recordings have become available, and it is now clear that Carl Nielsen is one of the great composers of this century, and that his music is about to exert a wide influence, far beyond the range of Scandinavia, where it has long been recognized. This book sets out to give a clear picture of Nielsen as a man and musician (there is a special biographical section by a Danish authority), and the detailed analyses of the symphonies are intended to serve as standard references.
General noteIncludes chronological survey of Carl Nielsen's main works (pages 212-226).
