General noteJohn Washington Graham of Hillsborough, N.C., was the son of William Alexander Graham (1804-1875) and Susannah Sarah Washington Graham (1816-1890). He served as captain and major in the 56th North Carolina Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. After the war, he was Orange County, N.C., solicitor, 1866-1868; delegate to the North Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1868; five-time state senator, 1868-1872, 1876, 1907-1908, 1911; railroad trustee; and lawyer. He first married Rebecca Bennehan Cameron (1840-1883) and then Margaret Forrester Bailey in 1887. He had eight brothers: Joseph (1837-1907), William Alexander (1839-1924), James Augustus (1841-1909), Robert Davidson (1843-1904), George Washington (1847-1923), Augustus Washington (1849-1936), Alfred Octavius (1853-1854), and Eugene Berrien (1858-1863); one sister, Susan Washington (1851-1909); and a son with whom he practiced law, Alexander H. Graham (1890-1977).
