Abstract | This introduction examines the origins of jaz and how jazz is made in order to help students know what to listen for and how to recognize the styles and contributions of the biggest names in jazz--Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Coltrane, among other greats. The author presents all the major style eras--Dixieland, swing, bebop, cool, hard bop, jazz-rock, fusion, and the avant-garde styles of the 1960s and 1970s--and limits his focus to 38 of the most significant composers and players in jazz history. In addition, the author outlines the important contributions of each performer, their styles, and the public's response to their music. |
