Abstract This book is a collection of ten essays--traditional and innovative, explanatory and analytical--each of which contributes to the growing field of Schenkerian research. Eight are published for the first time; the other two, by the late Ernst Oster, were originally published in the late 1940s. The book includes several articles that deal with Schenker's views on motivic connection and derivation. John Rothgeb discusses examples of the various types of 'concealed' motivic repetitions described by Schenker; Carl Schachter explores the relationship between motivic design and poetic imagery in four Schubert songs; and analytic essays by Charles Burkhart, Roger Kamien, and Ernst Oster clearly show the influence of Schenker's work in this area. Other articles in the collection deal with aspects of Schenker's theories that have been all but ignored in the existing literature: David Beach examines important issues in the teaching of Schenkerian theory and analysis; and Charles Burkhart addresses the relationship between analysis and performance. The final three articles are concerned with the extension of Schenker's ideas beyond the boundaries of traditional tonality: Saul Novack's essay, which summarizes the arguments for the application of Schenker's ideas to earlier music, is complemented by Felix Salzer's analysis of a Monteverdi madrigal; and James Baker's study proposes an analytic approach to works that lie between tonality and atonality.
