Abstract |
A brutal story, yet including some lyrical and even satirical moments, this opera was once banned in the former U.S.S.R. The crime is discovered and the two are sent to Siberia. When Sergei deserts her for one of the other women convicts (Sonetka), Katerina plunges both Sonetka and herself into the river. |
