Summary The prominence of the use of music therapy techniques as a tool to aid in development for children with cerebral palsy and severe and profound intellectual disabilities dates back to the early 1970's and 1980's after the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was passed by Congress. Before this time, little attention was given to children who were not considered 'normally functioning' and most of the individuals with disabilities were institutionalized and not educated. Today, research shows that extensive education programs and treatment plans are being implemented by multidisciplinary teams including music therapists, to ensure fair rights and proper care for this client population. The purpose of this study was to develop a goal-directed music activities book with an accompaniment compact disc for children ages 4-12 with cerebral palsy and/or severe and profound intellectual disabilities, for use by parents, teachers, and other caregivers in the home or school setting. The musical activities and songs were written to focus on the development of six skill areas including: motor, communication, cognitive, social, emotional, and musical skills. The result of this study is a multi-sensory music activities book and accompaniment compact disc entitled 'Developing Together Through Music', designed for the use of parents, teachers, and care-givers of children with cerebral palsy and/or severe and profound intellectual disabilities. It is composed of 18 activities, (three activities for each of the six developmental skills), and 21 songs recorded on the compact disc. Each group of activities contains a list of goals and observational objectives and each activity provides a content outline, activity instructions, and lyrics.
