a| While recent studies have aided greatly in gaining a fuller understanding of Mendelssohn's life and work, no serious attempt has been made to capture Mendelssohn's approach to performing. Essays in this book explore many aspects of Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersected with his work as composer. Contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulation, fingerings, and instrument techniques. Conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composition are explored through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. The study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music has resulted in valuable insights into nineteenth-century performance practice issues. In this new collection, contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to gain a deeper understanding of musical expression in nineteenth-century Germany.
