Summary Stress and depression are problems that people face in today's world. The current literature suggests that stressful situations and depressed odd are especially problematic for adult psychiatric patients with schizophrenia. Stress and depression have also been observed in healthcare staff as well. History presents evidence that music has great power to relieve stress as well as lift the spirits. The scientific application of music by a trained music therapist has yielded sizable dividends in the areas of stress relief and mood improvement. Likewise, martial arts techniques have been studied and performed for thousands of years, successfully combining the body and mind, thus improving the lives of all who practice them. Recent published studies indicate that martial arts have positive effects on stress and mood. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of musically enhanced martial arts as a method of stress reduction and mood elevation in adult psychiatric patients and healthcare staff. Five psychiatric group home residents and four caregivers participated in eight weekly sessions. Stress and mood levels were documented by pre/post-test evaluation forms, patient interviews, and experimenter observation. The movements used in this study were designed by the researcher, and were based on seven classical martial arts techniques. The experimenter taught the participants how to perform these movements while listening and responding to specially-designed music. Participants in this study quickly learned this routine, successfully incorporating stress-relieving breathing techniques and mood-lifting martial arts into a promising first effort with a small group of adult psychiatric patients. Experimental results suggest the benefits to be gained in music and martial arts therapy may be even greater with a larger, more diverse group, in a more spacious environment. Modified replications of this study are needed in order to fully evaluate this technique a feasible, effective treatment modality.
