Abstract |
The scope of the book, despite its concentration, is immensely wide; and so is the readership it addresses. Mahler scholars will appreciate its absorbing research and the approach to Mahler's forms (the author is especially strong on the composer's brilliant use of strophic form in his later period): performers--signers and conductors particularly--will respond to the interpretative issues the book brings to the fore; while general readers and Mahler enthusiasts will find a text that will deepen and sometimes fundamentally modify their perception of a body of music which has a central place in the composer's output and in the musical experience and awareness of the twentieth century and beyond. |
