Lewis was an African American teacher and principal of Stokes Elementary School, a segregated, predominantly African American public school in Stokes, Pitt County, North Carolina, He also served on the deacon board of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, N.C. and worked with the Pitt County Board of Elections. |
