Scope and content Most of the collection consists of correspondence from members of the Hughes and Grimes families, with the bulk of the letters addressed during World Wars I and II. Early letters are mainly to Thomas Hughes, Jr., from family and friends in Georgia, Arkansas, and South Carolina. William Hughes's Civil War-era letters describe the activities of the 1st N.C. Cavalry Regiment. Also included are legal and financial papers, grants and deeds for land in Glasgow County, Greene County, and Dobbs County, photographs, and genealogical information.
