Herbert Floyd Seawell, Sr., papers, 1785-1930.

Scope and content The bulk of the collection relates to Seawell's political activities in Moore County, N.C., and the state from 1915-1929. Correspondence concerns the 1916 Republican National Convention, to which Seawell was a delegate; possibility of Seawell's candidacy for governor; local, state, and national Republican Party politics; Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association; "The National Republican" and other party publications; poll tax; women's vote; Seawell's candidacy for the United States Eastern District judgeship; organization of Republican Clubs; Herbert Hoover presidential campaign of 1928; and Seawell's appointment as temporary chairman for the state convention. The remainder of Seawell's correspondence concerns his legal activities, his prominence in the North Carolina Bar Association and membership on its Executive Committee, and personal and family interests. Other personal correspondence includes requests for contributions to the Baptist State Convention, the cultivation of his orchard and farm, and the renting of some of his land. Seawell's legal papers contain indentures covering the years 1823 to 1928 from Moore, Chatham, Onslow, and Montgomery counties. His legal files include chattel mortgages, surveys, contracts, agreements, court calendars, and wills. Materials concerning Henry Seawell include information on grades, deportment, and tuition at the Porter Military Academy.

Biographical noteHerbert F. Seawell, Sr. (1869-1949), an attorney of Carthage, N.C., served as solicitor for the 7th North Carolina Judicial District, member of the Moore County Board of Electors, United States District Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, member of the North Carolina Bar Association Executive Committee, and judge of the United States Board of Tax Appeals. A Populist in 1892 and Republican thereafter, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1916. Seawell and his wife Ella McNeill had three children: Ella Meade, Herbert, Jr. ("Chub"), and Henry ("Pen").
