Papers reflect the activities of John Gideon Taylor and his family. Correspondence comprises approximately half of the collection. Letters of particular interest pertain to farming in Somerville, Tenn.; the routine interests and activities of William H. Taylor, a soldier in Company E of the 3rd Regiment of N.C. State Troops in Virginia; and the routine interests and activities of the sons of John Gideon Taylor while serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. Postcards depict Greenville, Washington, Rocky Mount, Farmville, Wilson, Buies Creek, Raleigh, Asheville, Benson, Salisbury, and Elm City, North Carolina; Nashville, Tenn.; Conway, St. Matthews, Charleston, and Florence, South Carolina; Birmingham, Ala.; Norfolk, Va.; Tampa, Fla.; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; and the USS Utah. Land grants, deeds, court orders, and other legal documents pertain to land in Pitt County. Also includes estate papers, financial papers, and miscellaneous material. |
| Biographical note | John Gideon Taylor, a native of Bethel, Pitt County, N.C., was a farmer, builder, and sawmill worker. Taylor served as a member of the Pitt County Board of Commissioners and as a member of the Board of Drainage Commissioners of Pitt County Drainage District No. 2. |
