Scope and content Genealogical notes of John A. Clark, Jr., contain information concerning families related to his father or mother and are, for the most part, of Craven and Pitt counties, N.C. Collection includes brief histories of the Riverside Christian Church of Hookerton, Christ Episcopal Church of New Bern, and New Bern courthouses. A 1949 manuscript describes the New Bern Fire Engine Company #1 and militia groups of the 1870s and 1880s. A 1924 draft of a newspaper article describes steamboat lines docking at New Bern from 1875 to 1905 and discusses the effects of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad lease by the private sector on water traffic, the fish and oyster industry, and truck farming in New Bern. Also includes labeled photographs of New Bern, lot entries and original land records for New Bern, and tombstone listings for cemeteries in Craven, Jones, Pamlico, and Jones counties. Land and legal records (1733-1915) pertain to Craven, Duplin, Jones, and Lenoir counties and consist of deeds, a bond, a power of attorney, a will, and articles of agreement.

The families, primarily from Craven and Pitt counties, N.C., include the Bright, Whitford, Witherington, Clark, Brooks, Purifoy, Causey, Gwaltney, Wadsworth, Franks, Miller, Rhem, Stokes, Gaskins, and Gardner families.
