Materials related to James W. Davis's service during World War II include confidential war reports and photographs of the Raton. After the war, Davis commanded the Polana; served as a personnel officer at the U.S. Naval Center at San Diego, Calif.; and commanded the submarine tender Sperry and Submarine Squadron 4 at Key West, Fla. Photographs depict personnel, vessels, and President Harry S. Truman's visit to Key West. Materials related to the Saint Paul include photographs and yearbooks. Also includes photographs of Cardinal Francis Spellman during his visit to the 7th Fleet while Davis was Chief of Staff; photographs and other materials concerning the NATO Defense College at Paris, France; photographs of various vessels; and photographs of Hordu Helgason at Norfolk, Va., during Davis's term as deputy chief of staff of the Supreme Allied Commander. Materials from Davis's term at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, include a brief history of United States involvement at Guantanamo and photographs. Administrative records include Davis's military correspondence and military personnel records. Correspondence from Davis's retirement reflects his transition from military to civilian life and his business affairs. | Biographical note | Rear Admiral James W. Davis, a 1930 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, began his military career aboard the USS Wyoming and USS Pennsylvania. After additional training in mechanical engineering, Davis was assigned to submarine duty and subsequently commanded two submarines in the Pacific during World War II. After World War II, Davis held seven more command positions and various administrative positions, including deputy director, Joint Staff, for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as naval deputy for the NATO Defense College. He retired from the Navy in 1965. |
