Collection consists of the financial papers and correspondence of Jeremiah M. Reid, personal correspondence of Maggie DeCormis, personal correspondence of Joseph K. and Sabrie Williams Reid, records and correspondence of Sheriff Joseph K. Reid, and copies of 19th century deeds. Receipts and business correspondence of Jeremiah M. Reid reflect dealings with cotton factors in Malvern, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; Richmond, Norfolk, and Lynchburg, Va.; and Plymouth and Washington, N.C. Maggie DeCormis's correspondence, which is mainly from family and friends, concerns personal, everyday happenings with references made to the millinery trade in Plymouth, N.C.; the use of soup kitchens to feed the sick during the flu epidemic of 1918; hemorrhagic fever; and treating illnesses with morphine and quinine. Letters between Joseph K. and Sabrie Williams Reid consist mainly of love letters. References are made to the sale of poisoned liquor in Roper, N.C., and a prevalence of pneumonia in Plymouth. Other Joseph K. Reid material relates primarily to his tax collecting duties as sheriff in Washington County, N.C. Letters from Izola Williams to Sabrie, which she wrote from Guatemala and Mexico, describe the climate and explain the Guatemalan monetary system. Copies of deeds are for land in Washington and Martin counties belonging to the Walker and Reid families. |
