James Yadkin Joyner papers, 1850-1878, (bulk 1879-1954).

Scope and content The bulk of the collection consists of Joyner's personal correspondence and financial papers, although there are also a large number of clippings and other material pertaining to the educational institutions with which Joyner was associated, including La Grange Academy and La Grange Collegiate Institute, Winston Graded Schools, Goldsboro Graded Schools, and the Department of English at the State Normal and Industrial College for Women. Also includes correspondence and speeches pertaining to public education in North Carolina and the South, as well as Joyner's student days at the University of North Carolina. Other correspondence concerns Joyner's law career, the Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association, the Prudential Insurance Company, and Joyner's management of farms in Lenoir County, N.C. Contains published and unpublished materials related to his term as Superintendent of Public Instruction. Materials concerning Joyner's personal life reflect his close relationship with Charles Duncan McIver. Family correspondence includes letters that reveal the nature of Joyner's courtship of Effie Rouse, and the experiences of Joyner's son, James Noah, while he worked for the British-American Tobacco Company in China. Financial materials include memoranda books. Deeds and legal papers primarily reflect the affairs of the Fields and Joyner families in Lenoir County. Photographs depict Joyner, Josephus Daniels and his wife, and the burning of the Atlantic Hotel in Morehead City.

Biographical noteJames Yadkin Joyner, a native of Davidson County, N.C., was an advocate for public schools in North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Joyner taught at, operated, and organized various schools throughout North Carolina. He studied law at the Greensboro Law School and practiced in a Goldsboro law firm. Joyner chaired the Department of English at the Normal and Industrial College for Women in Greensboro before being appointed superintendent of public instruction in North Carolina in 1902. Joyner and his wife Effie E. Rouse had two children: William T. and James Noah.
