Scope and content The bulk of the collection consists of legal material and files. Of significance are records related to the account of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, including monthly statements for legal services and letters concerning the tax levy of the Greenville Special School District and the speed of trains passing through Pitt County. Also includes copies of contracts forming the law partnership of Skinner, Cooper, and Whedbee and monthly accounts for the firm for 1927 and 1928; legal files relating to the Washington Tobacco Company, including a tobacco-buying contract between the Washington Tobacco Company and the P. Lorillard Company, as well as materials documenting efforts to thwart the organization of a labor union among its employees; materials regarding the Home Telephone and Telegraph Company; statements for the Eureka Lumber Company of Washington, N.C.; legal materials relating to the Greenville, N.C., Daily Reflector; ledger book of Lewis Cooper; and legal files of the E.B. Ficklen Tobacco Company.

Biographical noteLewis G. Cooper, a Greenville, N.C., attorney, practiced law from 1925 until his retirement in 1952. Born in Henderson, N.C., he subsequently attended Duke University. Early in his legal career, Cooper associated himself with two prominent Greenville attorneys, Harry Skinner and William L. Whedbee, to form the partnership of Skinner, Cooper, and Whedbee.
