Scope and content This collection contains the office files of U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones, Sr., of North Carolina covering his complete tenure (1966-1992). The Collection is broken down into ten major series: (I) Constituent Correspondence, (II) Legislative Correspondence, (III) Bills, (IV) Committees, (V) North Carolina Projects, (VI) Military Services, (VII) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, (VIII) Political Files, (IX) Colleges and Universities, and (X) Photographs.

Biographical noteWalter B. Jones, Sr. was born in 1913, and died in 1992. He received a B.S. from North Carolina State University in 1934. From 1934 to 1949, he was engaged in the office supply business. From 1949 to 1953, Jones was mayor of Farmville. He was elected representative in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1955 to 1959, and was North Carolina State Senator in 1965. Elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-Ninth U.S. Congress, 1st District, North Carolina, by special election on February 5, 1966, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Herbert C. Bonner, he was re-elected to eleven succeeding Congresses until January 3, 1989. He was Chairman of the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, and of the Oil, Seeds, and Rice sub-committee, and a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Tobacco sub-committee.
