Abstract |
This collection contains correspondence; uncorrected proofs and manuscripts; speeches; financial records; family papers, which include a copy of Bible records concerning the ancestry of Minnie Deans Pierce; biographical items; and publications containing articles of or about Ovid Williams Pierce. The bulk of the correspondence reflects the development of Pierce as a literary figure; the writing and publishing of his novels "The Plantation," "On a Lonesome Porch," "The Devils' Half," "The Wedding Guest," and "Judge Buell's Legacy," as well as his shorter works; his role as a faculty member at East Carolina University; and the publication of a literary magazine, "The Rebel," at East Carolina College. Also included are first editions of his five novels and miscellaneous items, such as pamphlets, magazines, and news articles pertaining to the Dismal Swamp. |
