Abstract Collection consists of correspondence, speeches, judge's notes, case files, clippings, photographs, campaign literature, and scrapbooks. Correspondence concerns the 1944 Democratic National Convention; Larkins's political activities, including the election campaigns of William B. Umstead and R. Hunt Parker; activities of the State Department of Conservation and Development and the State Highway Commission; the conspiracy case against T. Lamar Caudle of Wadesboro; support of Larkins for governor in 1960; and appointment of Larkins to a federal judgeship. Other papers include court case files and judge's notes, which are concerned with conservation and land use, public school integration, and legislation and jurisdiction of the U.S. District Court, Eastern North Carolina; Democratic Executive Committee files, which are concerned with fund raising and election campaign activities; speeches by Larkins, Adlai E. Stevenson, Malcom B. Seawell, John Harden, and Frank W. Abrams; papers from the William B. Umstead gubernatorial campaign of 1952; photographs; campaign literature and financial papers from the Larkins gubernatorial campaign; and Larkins family papers.

Biographical noteJohn Davis Larkins, Jr., an attorney in Trenton, N.C., was born on June 8, 1909. Judge Larkins was a member of the North Carolina State Senate and President Protempore, a soldier in the U.S. Army, chairman of annual North Carolina Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinners, secretary of the North Carolina Democratic Executive Committee (1952-1954) and its chairman (1954-1958), chairman of the Governor's Advisory Budget Commission, member of the Democratic National Committee, delegate-at-large to theDemocratic National Convention, and an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor of North Carolina. In 1961 he was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
