Summary | The purpose of this thesis is to examine Charlotte Perkins Gilman's suffrage ideology and to use that ideology as a framework for analyzing Gilman as a key figure in Progressive Era intellectual history. Primarily through analysis of her public work, both fiction and nonfiction, this thesis offers interpretation of Gilman's gender-based ideology, as seen through the lens of her suffrage ideology, an aspect of her thought neglected by historians. This thesis considers Gilman as one of the most influential ideologues of the suffrage movement, and thus as a valuable tool for understanding what motivated Progressive Era women reformers. Through analysis of the ideology of Gilman and the women reformers she influenced, this thesis examines the commonalities and paradox of Progressive Era reformers, and the key role that gender played in that era. |
