Abstract This collection of Civil War letters centers around Felix Miller, his wife Elisabeth, his son Levi F. Miller and their activities during the war. Most of the correspondence concerns the family's survival during the war. Other topics include the need for food and clothing due to the lack of rations; Company H, 28th North Carolina Regiment's activities in camp near Orange Court House, Va., and on the Rapidan River; fighting at Manassas, Va.; a report that General Robert E. Lee's troops prevented General George G. Meade's troops from crossing the Rapidan River in November, 1863; Felix Miller's poor opinion of a speech Governor Zebulon Vance delivered to the soldiers in April, 1864; the shooting of deserters; Confederate taxes and bonds; the condition of the farm in Davidson County, N.C., during the war; and camp life.

Biographical noteFelix Miller and his family lived in Davidson County, N.C. During the Civil War, Felix Miller served in Company H, 48th North Carolina Regiment in General John R. Cooke's brigade. Miller's son, Levi, joined the same regiment on January 27, 1864. Mrs. Elisabeth Miller managed the family farm and household in the absence of her husband and son.
