Summary |
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the closed glottis, open glottis, and a combination methods of pushing and the duration of the second stage of labor using Orem's self-care theoretical framework. Descriptive studies identify closed glottis and open glottis pushing methods. The literature reports that most women use a combination of the closed and open methods. Comparison of the duration of the second stage to the method of pushing has demonstrated inconsistent results as to which pushing method results in a shorter duration. Additionally, confusion results when health care providers give laboring women directions on how and when to push that contradicts the woman's body sensations. This convenience sample consisted of 45 primiparous subjects at a level two community hospital in eastern North Carolina who met purposive criteria. The results of the statistical analysis indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in the duration of the second stage of labor between the closed glottis, open glottis, or combination pushing methods. These findings have the potential to influence health care provider education and the management of the second stage of labor. Several recommendations are made for future research based on the methodological issues raised during this study. |
