Abstract |
Educator Patricia Turner was born on October 11, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1959, when she was 13 years old, Turner began school at the previously all-white Norview Junior High School. Along with sixteen other students, Turner helped pave the way for integration in the south. She went on to attend Norview High School, where she graduated near the top of her class. She pursued further education, receiving her B.S. degree in mathematics from Norfolk State University in 1990, her M.S. degree in education from Old Dominion University in 1997, and took classes toward a Ph.D. degree from the College of William and Mary in 2008. Turner taught for Norfolk Public Schools as a middle school math teacher until 2008. She was awarded several honors including her induction to the Black Press Hall of Fame in 2002, and citation in Who's Who in Black History in 2003. |
