Abstract Singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson was born on February 14, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. He founded R&B group The Miracles while still in high school. Robinson and his group met Berry Gordy after a failed audition, and became one of the first groups signed once Motown Records was incorporated. In late 1960, the group recorded their first hit single, "Shop Around", which became Motown's first million-selling hit record. Robinson wrote over 26 hits for the Miracles, and several more for other Motown acts, until he turned to a solo career in 1973. He also served as a vice president at Motown Records. Having received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Howard University's Honorary Doctorate, and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States, Smokey was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1989.
