Abstract |
Civil rights activist and politician Carl Snowden was born on June 17, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland. Snowden attended Annapolis Elementary School. Snowden was expelled from Annapolis High School over his involvement in boycotts against school's hiring practices, but local benefactors raised funds for him to attend the private Key School. He earned his M.H.S. degree from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, in 1984. In 1985, Snowden was elected to the Annapolis City Council, where he fought for landmark legislation against discrimination based on race, color, gender, and national origin. Following Snowden's unsuccessful run for mayor of Annapolis, Snowden worked for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and the Office of the County Executive for Anne Arundel County. In 2007, Snowden was appointed the first Director for Civil Rights in the Maryland Attorney General Offices by Douglas F. Gansler. Snowden was honored at the 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner in Glen Burnie, Maryland. |
