Abstract |
Plastic surgeon and professor Dr. Raphael Lee was born in Sumter, South Carolina on October 29, 1949. Growing up in the segregated South, Lee received his B.A. degree in 1971 in electrical engineering from the University of South Carolina. He enrolled in Temple University School of Medicine and Drexel University College of Engineering. In 1975, he earned both his M.D. degree and his M.A. degree, later earning a Sc.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979. Starting at the University of Chicago in 1975, Lee later taught at Harvard University and M.I.T. Returning to Chicago in 1989, Lee became a full professor at the University of Chicago in two years and continued to teach there. He received numerous awards, including the prestigious MacArthur Prize Fellowship. He was recognized as one of sixteen outstanding scientists in African American history by the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. |
