Abstract Gastrointestinal surgeon Dr. Keiffer J. Mitchell, Sr. was born on November 4, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. His father, Clarence Mitchell, became known as the "101st senator" for his political influence as a civil rights adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson. Mitchell's mother, Juanita Jackson Mitchell, was an NAACP activist. Mitchell graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1959. He attended Morgan State University, but earned his B.A. degree from Lincoln State College in 1963 before receiving his M.D. degree from Meharry Medical College. Mitchell became interested in the sciences as a student at Baltimore City College High School, working as a gastrointestinal surgeon. His sense of social obligation led him to crusade for equal access to healthcare for Baltimore's African American community.
