Abstract |
Hair stylist James Harris was born on October 20, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating in 1967, he worked for the African American hair care company Summit Labs. He graduated from La Newton School of Beauty in 1974 and opened his first salon which he then sold in 1977. He moved to New York becoming the styles director for Sole Scissors, the country's first salon chain. In 1980, he helped create Shear Energy, a system for managing excessively curly hair. In 1991, Harris became president of the Black Hair Is line at Glemby International Beauty Salons. He then worked for L'Oreal and returned to the salon industry with the James Harris Salon in Boston and New York. In 1991, Harris became the first African American male member of Intercoiffure, an organization of elite stylists and salon owners. Harris founded the African American stylists' organization, Hair Fashion Group and worked with celebrities and designers. |
