Abstract |
Academic administrator and newspaper publisher Shirley James was born in Georgetown, South Carolina on September 5, 1946. In 1964, James graduated from Howard High School. She received her B.A. degree in psychology from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1968 and her ED.M. degree in guidance and counseling from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1970. James held positions as director of testing, vice president of Student Affairs and counselor-orientation director at Savannah State University. In 1973, along with her husband, Robert Earl James, they purchased and revived The Savannah Tribune (published from 1875 to 1960). She became its publisher and editor in 1983. After her retirement in 2002, James became coordinator of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival. She was appointed to the board of the Savannah Area Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2004. In 2005, she was appointed to a five-year term on the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport Commission. |
