Abstract |
Basketball player Jerry Harkness was born in May 7, 1940 in Harlem, New York. Harkness was a naturally gifted athlete in his youth and upon joining the basketball team at DeWitt Clinton High, his athletic prowess was apparent. Harkness became the leading scorer on the Loyola University basketball team for three consecutive years. Nearly forty years after his final season, his 1,749 points remain the third-highest total in the school's history. As team captain in 1963, he led Loyola to the national championship and was named the NCAA's Most Valuable Player. After his graduation, Harkness joined the New York Knicks. In 1967, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers. In 1969, Harkness became a sportscaster in Indianapolis. He devoted his efforts to civil rights issues by serving on the Indiana Human Rights Commission. He was actively involved with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Indianapolis' 100 Black Men. |
