Abstract |
City council member Blondell Reynolds Brown was born in Sumter, South Carolina, in 1952. A political leader, educator and community activist, Brown obtained her B.A. degree in elementary education from Pennsylvania State University. In 1975, she earned her M.A. degree in education and began teaching in Philadelphia's public schools. Brown served as the committee person for the 24th Ward, Third Division, from 1982 to 1986. In 1991, Senator Chaka Fattah hired her as his legislative director. Brown served as community affairs director for State Senator Vincent Hughes before campaigning and winning a seat on the Philadelphia City Council in 1999. Brown served on the boards of various civic organizations. Her signature program, held each March, was the Women Making a Difference Celebration. Brown has advocated for arts education and taught weekly dance classes to children for more than twenty years. She married Howard Brown in 1994. |
