Abstract |
Art gallery owner Peg Alston was born in Camden, New Jersey on December 26, 1938. Prior to starting her private art dealership, Alston was employed as a social worker from 1969 to 1975. She obtained her B.A. degree from New York University in 1960 and her M.S.W. degree from Columbia University in 1964. Her career in art began in 1969 as a council member for the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York. In 1975, she established the Peg Alston Gallery specializing in African American art and sculpture. Alston served on the New York State Council for the Arts bringing more awareness to African American artists. She curated Retour Aux Sources, the first exhibit of African American artists in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and West Africa, in 1980. In 1995, she was honorary chairperson of Black Pearls: Treasures of African American Women Artists, an exhibit at New York City's Cinque Gallery. |
