Abstract This film documents the coming together of twelve women with breast cancer for a three day oceanside retreat. Their aim was to share their mutual experiences and to increase public awareness of this ever growing epidemic. Each of the twelve women is in a different stage of breast cancer. Some have been in remission for many years. Others are experiencing a first or second recurrence; some are dying. It was a weekend of soul searching and mutual support. As each woman relives her journey through the emotionally charged events of medical treatment, coping with family and friends, and facing the possibility of death, she is helped by the understanding and compassion of the group. They express anger at inhumane methods of treatment and frustration at an often unresponsive medical establishment. Tears Are Not Enough is a rollercoaster of anger, hope, sorrow and laughter shared by women who are not afraid to speak out.
