Teaching with Bayley ; 4
|
Abstract |
Newly qualified PE teacher Steve Davies is settling in well at Chiswick Community School, but he has a problem. He's very confident in practical PE but in theory lessons, he has trouble asserting himself. When he tells teaching consultant John Bayley that he never likes to be seen as 'the bad guy', Bayley thinks he may have a solution.Observing Steve's Year 10 GCSE class, Bayley discovers he has an excellent rapport with his students but is reluctant to push an instruction when it isn't obeyed. Consequently Steve's confidence is being diminished and he isn't getting the maximum from the class. The following day Steve teaches Year 10 again, armed with Bayley's advice. It is possible to see a different teacher emerging. His newly gained self-confidence produces, according to Bayley, a "95% lesson", with students bringing together practical and theoretical PE. |
