Description: Includes Claudio Montero's reports to the governor of the Philippines on his expedition of February to March 1855 to chart the river routes as far north as Cotabato, and to explore the lakes of Liguasán, Buluán, and Tucunabagn. He describes the port of Polloc, and each of the independent sultanates that control the river region. Includes foldout piece with drawings of weapons, boats, etc. Ms. copies from 1855 of 7 reports by 5 Spanish colonial officials containing proposals for improving the political and military administration of Joló and Mindanao, based on explorations of the Mindanao River between Aug. 1854 and July 1855. Fernández de Córdoba describes his Aug. 1854 trip up the river to learn more about the bellicose Moros. In April 1855, he submits his proposals for controlling the river by establishing military bases on the island of Santa Isabel and in various towns. His report of June 21, 1855 describes the fortifications planned for Cotabato and Polloc, and includes estimates of the costs and necessary manpower, and the engineers' building specifications. Ramón de Mascaro proposes control of the river by commerce and trade; by teaching the Moros to build houses and grow sugar; abolishing slavery; and exempting the area from taxes. Romaldo Crespo explored the river from its mouth to Limbalu, and his report of June 1855 contains information on relationships between infidels and Moros and on Moro society of which the Spanish government was previously unaware. He proposes occupying the mouth of the river and introducing steam navigation. Finally, Cruz de Oyanguren wants to introduce more liberal trade and tariff regulations in Joló and Mindanao, reduce taxes, and encourage settlers of all races.
