Summary Some 50 years after Algeria gained independence and 40 years after the founding of the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumedienne Andreas Rost explores with his photography project the avant-garde aims and social reality of this university designed by Oscar Niemeyer. Amazingly the university is little known and seldom depicted even amongst architecture experts. Conceived as a place of instruction for 15,000 students, just under 25,000 now study there. The photographer sees the campus as a post-modern building long before this term existed.00Oscar Niemeyer created a complex architecture rich in contradictions: The individual buildings on the campus not only enter in dialogs with one another but also form stark contrasts. Open, democratic structures alternate with hermetic and meditative forms. The highly imaginative, essentially delicate ensemble of the students’ village contrasts radically with the bunker-like lecture theatres, and unexpected elements await everywhere such as gardens, viewing platforms, fountains or clusters of seats. Despite its melancholy air the ensemble exudes the vision of a highly optimistic future.
