Abstract In 1939, a Communist soldier is sent to the wilderness of the Northern Shaanxi province to collect folk songs for use by the revolutionary armies. A peasant girl learns from the soldier that she doesn't have to remain bound to her lonely, traditional life. Inspired to action, she flees from an arranged marriage and escapes across the great Yellow River.
