Abstract | Twelve-year-old Gabriella lives on a North Carolina military base in 1957, where she meets an African-American marine named Hawkins who coaches her to swim in the river where two years earlier, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till's body was tossed subsequent to his lynching for whistling at a white woman. As Gabriella's swimming improves, she finds her strength with the help of Hawkins and inspiration from Emmett's spirit in the river's waters. |
