Abstract This first part of the Henry VI trilogy, recreates Henry's early days as King. It is the time of wars in France, from the seige of Orleans to the expulsion of the English from the French soil. True to the popular view at that time, Shakespeare characterizes the heroine of the French victories, Joan of Arc, as a "minister of Hell" and a wanton. On the homefront we glimpse the beginning of the long civil wars between the houses of York and Lancaster.
