Summary The research investigated the relationship between the mother's level of anxiety and her child's behavioral response during a painful health care procedure, relationship between the child's age and the mother's The ability to display comforting and supportive behaviors were also correlated with the mother's anxiety level. The conceptual framework for this study focused on Sullivan's (1953) concepts of induction and empathy, concepts explain the phenomena of "emotional contagion or These communion" between the infant and his mother. The study was conducted in a military pediatric clinic located in North Carolina. A convenience sample of twenty-five mother-child pairs was selected to participate. The State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the mother-child observation rating scale were utilized for the collection of the data. Each survey was administered once within a three week period. The data generated from the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the mother-child observation rating scale were analyzed using the McNemar chi-square test and the Mantel-Haenszel chi-square test. Findings revealed that there were no relationships between the mother's anxiety and the child's upset when controlling for the mothers's age, child's age, child's birth order or history of last Testing of the hypotheses revealed that the mother's state and trait anxiety did not have a significant impact on children's behavioral upset, significant correlation found between the mother's level of injection. There was also no state and trait anxiety and her comforting behaviors.
